So, as I was looking for something to write about, I realized that I haven't been watching many movies lately, and I'm not in the mood to talk about series, and the last book I read left me TOO HEARTBROKEN, and NO I don't want to talk about it.
Which is why I decided to make a list of my favorite movies of all time.
Let me start by explaining what I take into consideration when I watch a movie.
The most important part for me, is the soundtrack and/or score of the movie. Let's face it, if you were watching an amazing battle scene and the music was off, you wouldn't enjoy it as much; or if it was a sad scene and the song was something like The Death and Resurrection Show by Killing Joke, you would want to kill someone, not cry with the actors. (I will soon make a post about my favorite soundtracks and scores in movies and series)
The acting. Ok, so nowadays, you have either just beautiful people who can't act and are hired to just be pretty on screen, or amazingly good actors that are actually hired because of their talent. I hate it when actors are hired because of their looks or because they're related to someone famous. STOP IT, that only works when they can ACTUALLY ACT or if it's in a parody and you can kill them off shamelessly.
The costumes. Now, I like all kinds of movies, and I pay attention to way too many details. When watching a movie that's based on a certain period in time, I usually comment on the accuracy of the costumes. I also enjoy the creativity of the costume designers when dealing with something like aliens or maybe adapting certain dresses or suits for the public's liking.
Makeup and hair. Alright, as ballerina, I know what's appropriate or not for certain situations. Something I usually love it when they use make up on actresses to accentuate a certain quality or asset, but it is SO horrible when they over-use it and make them look like clowns. As for the hair, it's just like costumes, they have to match the tone of the movie or that's just a downside when watching it.
Alrighty then, let's begin. Take into consideration that the order in no way reflects that I like a movie better than another in the list, because I do not have just one favorite, these are all movies I watch over and over again because I LOVE THEM.
Belle (2013). This movie came to my attention just last year, and it quickly became a favorite. It's about a girl who has inherited her father's large estate after he dies, and her struggles as a mulato in a time in which slaves were still a thing, and about the beginning of the fight for the abolition of slavery. I LOVE period dramas, and this one is just so full of different situations that probably actually could've happened at that time. Also, it has a forbidden love in it and I am a sucker for those. Gugu Mbatha-Raw who plays the main character is a great actress and she just makes me cry every single time I watch this movie.
Anna and the King (1999). Oh this movie. I remember watching this with my mother when I was younger, and IT IS SO FUCKING ROMANTIC. Forbidden love, my favorite thing to watch when it is well done. Jodie Foster and Yun-Fat Chow make the perfect Anna Leonowens and King Mongkut. The story is so deep, a monarchy that slowly realizes that things need to change, and a British teacher that needs to learn how to cope with the fact that she has to change her ways a little if she wants to survive in a foreign country.
Elysium (2013). This movie is so freaking disturbing once you think about it. In 2154, the wealthy live on a man-made space station called Elysium while the rest of the population, the lower class, live on a ruined Earth. Matt Damon takes on a mission that intends to bring equality to the polarized worlds. Because seriously, in Elysium they can cure cancer and on earth it's all death and sickness. Also, it has an extremely realistic ending. It's not all rainbows and butterflies, which is why I kinda love this movie.
John Wick (2014). Please tell me I'm not the only one who thought this movie was just fucking amazing? I mean, Keanu Reeves playing someone who is feared by the entire Russian mob? FUCKING HELL, it's just freaking cool!! Baba Yaga all the way biotches! I recommend this if you're looking for an action packed hour and a half.
King Arthur (2004). As legends come, the one of King Arthur and the round table is one of my favorites. It has always been portrayed as a mythical character and what I love about this movie is that it makes him seem like a normal fellow with his own opinons and thoughts on things. In a time when Clive Owen was considered great, he plays Arthur flawlessly. And we get to see great actors like Mads Mikkelsen as Tristan (my favorite character in this movie), Ioan Gruffudd as Lancelot, Joel Edgerton as Gawain, Hugh Dancy as Galahad, the AWESOME Ray Winstone as Bors, and Ray Stevenson as Dagonet. Also, Keira Knightley being all savage and shit. PLUS, I love how they portrayed Merlin, not as the usual white bearded, Dumbledore-in-the-first-two-Harry-Potter-films kind, but as a woad, a sorcerer/druid that doesn't really ever show magic, but is just freaking cool and mysterious. Plus, the freaking soundtrack is SO inspiring!!
Practical Magic (1998). Witches? YEAH. Crazy aunts who make truth-telling margaritas?? HELL YEAH. Sandra Bullock plays a witch who wants to forget about her powers. Nicole Kidman is the carefree, use-your-magic-for-whatever sister. If you want a fun movie that also shows that magic comes with a cost, I fully recommend it.
Singing in the Rain (1952). This is an oldie that made me fall in love with musicals. Gene Kelly has always been one of my favorite actors of all time. Combined with the HILARIOUS Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds, you get a fun, romantic movie with dancing and lots of music.
The Fifth Element (1997). This was the first movie with aliens in it that I saw, and even though right now a remake would be fucking amazing, I wouldn't change Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich for the world. I think this was one of my favorite movies when I was younger, and I find myself coming back to it from time to time. So, creepy aliens, action, a bit of comedy, and a prophecy, YUP, a movie worth your time.
The Last Samurai (2003). Tom Cruise is not my favorite actor, never has been and never will be, bt this movie was so deep and as a history fan I loved the take they gave the end of the samurais. Ken Watanabe plays Katsumoto, the fierce samurai leader who feels intrigued by the American that kind of falls into his path. I have always had a deep respect for the old ways of the Japanese and Chinese culture, so it's always good to watch a movie that gives you a perspective on the way things were done in those times.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003). Now, I know that most people my age don't know who Captain Nemo is, or Allan Quatermain, Mina Harker, Dorian Gray, Dr. Jekyll, Tom Sawyer, or Moriarty; but for me, seeing all these characters together, it was just an entertaining BOMB of amazingness thrown in one movie. To be honest, it's probably not the best movie ever made, but it is cool.
The Man from U.N.C.L.E (2015). Henry Cavill in suits THE ENTIRE MOVIE. Enough said. NAAAH, just kidding, altough that is why most women went to watch it. This is a reboot of the 1964 series, and according to my mother, they did it correctly. I'll probably have to watch the series somehow to atest to that myself, but I recommend the movie because it it pretty fun to watch.
This is Where I leave you (2014). Okay, to be honest, I don't know why this movie got here, because there's basically only one scene I re-watch all the time, which is one of the last scenes in which two of the brothers have a pretty intense moment that just makes me cry every single time. I don't really know why, but I think it's the combination of the background of the family and the song (Through the dark by Alexi Murdoch). In all honesty, I recommend you watch it, it's a family drama.
